Baccarani (Bologna, Italy): Chairman of the Italian Cooperative Study Group on CML, which has been continuously active for more than 25 years and has run a number of clinical studies and trials which have been published in peer-reviewed journals, including chemotherapy, conventional and non conventional, splenectomy, interferon, autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation, interferon and low dose arabinosyl cytosine and imatinib. Prof. Baccarani has an international reputation for long term studies on treatment and prognosis of CML.

PD Dr. T. Fischer (Mainz, Germany): The applicant is actively pursuing clinical and molecular research using selective tyrosine kinase inhibitors in hematologic and oncologic malignancies. A variety of early phase II protocols were initiated and combine molecular endpoints with clinical endpoints. This approach will define molecular criteria of sensitive patient populations and will provide important information for the design of future clinical trials using molecularly targeted therapies.

Prof.Dr. A. Tobler (Bern, Switzerland): He has been involved for many years in clinical studies in chronic myeloid leukemia within the framework of the German CML-Study group and the SAKK. He also is active in experimental hematology research with the focus on molecular studies in normal and leukemic hematopoiesis with particular emphasis on allelotyping in lymphoid neoplasms, myeloid differentiation and cell cycle. Current studies aim at elucidating the regulation of the apoptotic and antiapoptotic p73 gene in the various phases of CML and its regulation by imatinib. His research is funded by a grant of the Swiss National Science Foundation and several other grants.
