Prof.Dr. J. Apperley (London, UK): Particular interests are the biology and management of CML which has led naturally to an extensive experience in autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. She is currently president of both the European and British Societies of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BSBMT and EBMT), having previously served on the board of both organisations as the chair of the Chronic Leukemia Working Party of the EBMT and the Chair of the Clinical Trials Committee of the BSBMT. She is also on the Executive Committee of IBMTR. She is a past Chair of the Clinical Working Group of World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA).
Prof.Dr. A. Gratwohl (Basel, Switzerland): Longstanding experience in clinical and experimental hematopoetic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Former President of EBMT and current director of the EBMT activity survey. Member of the Acute and Chronic Leukemia Working Party of EBMT. Board member of EHA. Chair or Co-chair of several prospective randomized studies in the field of HSCT; defining the role of peripheral blood versus bone marrow as stem cell source; assessment of main pre-, peri- and post-transplant risk factors, with a particular interest in Graft-versus-host Disease (GvHD). Responsible for co-ordinating retrospective risk factor analyses and prospective studies. Director of the EBMT activity surveys on incidence of HSCT in Europe and trend analyses.
Prof.Dr. D. Niederwieser (Leipzig, Germany): Longstanding experience in clinical and experimental HSCT. Former President of the Austrian Society of Transplantation – Austrotransplant. Chairman of the Chronic Leukemia Working Party of EBMT. Member of the Acute and Chronic Leukemia WP of EBMT. PI or Co-PI of prospective randomised studies in the field of HSCT and in hematology; special interests in allogeneic stem cell transplantation with reduced conditioning. Reviewer for journals in the field of HSCT. Co-prinicipal investigator of the German AML Intergroup Study of the German Leukemia Network.

Prof.Dr. A. Bacigalupo (San Martino, Italy): Head of the Department of Hematology at Ospedale San Martino. 1973 he started an allogeneic transplant programme and has performed with his team over 1300 allogeneic bone marrow transplants. He has conducted numerous clinical trials in patients with aplastic anaemia, focussing particularly on graft-versus-host and graft-versus-leukemia effects of allogeneic transplantation. Board member of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) since 1983 and was elected as EBMT President for the 1998-2002 term. President of the Italian Group of Bone Marrow Transplantation. Research interests include bone marrow transplantation, graft-versus-host disease, graft-versus-leukemia, viral infection, leukemia and aplastic anaemia.
