Lead Participants:

Prof.Dr. H. Einsele (Tübingen, Germany): Longstanding experience in management and prophylaxis of infectious complications in neutropenic patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. Responsible for undertaking monitoring studies for infectious agents in patients with leukemia and after allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Responsible for co-ordinating molecular screening and monitoring for immune reconstitution in several funded research project as well as in trials organized by the EBMT and Arbeitsgemeinschaft Infektionen of the German Hematology association.

Prof.Dr. P. Ljungman (Stockholm, Sweden): He has published more than 200 peer reviewed papers; the vast majority in infectious disease complications in hematology and stem cell transplant patients. His main research interests are viral infections in stem cell transplant patients and vaccination of patients with hematological malignancies and stem cell transplant patients. He has been the Chairman of the Infectious Diseases Working Party of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation 1992-1998 and is the chairman for the registry subcommittee of the EBMT since 1998. He is an active member in the EORTC invasive fungal infections group and the International Immuncompromised Host Society.

Prof.Dr. H. Akan (Ankara, Turkey): He is an expert on the prevention and prophylaxis of infect complications in patients after SCT.

PD Dr. A. Böhme (Frankfurt, Germany): see WP 2.

PD Dr. D. Buchheidt (Mannheim, Germany): Medizinische Klinik, Universitätsklinikum Mannheim, University of Heidelberg. Longstanding experience with infections in patients with hematological malignancies, especially systemic fungal infections in patients with acute leukemias, including development and validation of novel PCR-based assays to improve early diagnosis and treatment monitoring of invasive aspergillosis in high risk patients.

Prof.Dr. C. Cordonnier (Créteil, France): Hematology Department. Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Henri Mondor, 94000 Créteil, France. Longstanding interest in leukemia, stem cell transplantation and infectious complications in hematology, and especially neutropenic patients, including diagnostic, epidemiologic, and therapeutic issues. She has extensive experience of collaborative European studies on infectious complications in stem cell transplant and neutropenic patients through the European Group for Blood and Bone-Marrow Transplantation and the EORTC-Invasive Fungal infection Cooperative Group, and has initiated an educational program on this topic.

Prof.Dr. A. Gratwohl (Basel, Switzerland): see WP 4.

Dr. A. Locasciulli (Rome, Italy): Active member of the European Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) Group serving as Working Party (WP) Member in the Aplastic Anemia and Infectious Diseases Working Party. On the behalf of these WP's, she has conducted or participated to several multicenter studies (retrospective, registry-based, prospective). She has also been PI or Co-Investigator in retrospective and prospective cooperative studies planned and carried out on the behalf of the Gruppo Italiano Trapianto di Midollo (GITMO).

Prof.Dr. J. Maertens (Leuven, Belgium): Catholic University of Leuven, University Hospital Gasthuisberg, Department of Hematology, Assistant Professor in clinical hematology. Longstanding interest and experience in invasive fungal infections in neutropenic patients and stem cell transplant recipients. Evaluation of galactomannan detection as diagnostic and prognostic tool in invasive aspergillosis. Member of the EORTC-IFI group, the EBMT Infectious Diseases Working Party, the Immunocompromised Host Society and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC).

R. Martino (Barcelona, Spain): Attending Physician, Division of Clinical hematology and hematopoietic Stem Cell Clinical transplant Program, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona. Acute leukemias, chronic myeloid leukemia, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin's and Hodgkin's lymphomas are the main disorders treated at this institution, both through conventional and intensive therapies and through several programs of stem-cell transplantation. Infectious complications, lymphoproliferative disorders and GVHD are important areas of our work. Active participation in the following scientific groups:EBMT, Infectious Diseases Working party, IBMTR, GVL/GVHD subcommittee, Lymphoma subcommittee, EORTC, Invasive Fungal Infections Cooperative Group.

Prof.Dr. G. Maschmeyer (Berlin, Germany): Assistant Professor at the Charité University Hospital Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Humboldt University, Berlin. Longstanding experience in diagnosis and management of infections in immunosuppressed patients, esp. neutropenic patients. Chairman of Working Party on Infections, German Society for Hematology and Oncology. Chairman of the section of Infections in Hematology and Oncology, German Paul Ehrlich Society for Chemotherapy.

Prof.Dr. P. Reusser (Courtedoux, Switzerland): Department of Medicine, Hôpital du Jura, Faculty of the Basel, University School of Medicine. Academic Awards: Young Investigator Award of the International Immunocompromised Host Society (1992); MSD-Award of the Swiss Society for Infectious Diseases (1997).

Active member in the EORTC invasive fungal infections group. In the two groups, member of the steering committees.

Prof.Dr. C. Viscoli (Cuneo, Italy): Expert in treatment of infectious complications in leukemia.

Dr. K.N. Ward (London, UK): Virology Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Virology Dept, University College London. Longstanding interest in viral infections after organ transplant. International work. Consultant, Wellcome Tropical Medicine Unit, Saigon, Vietnam to advise on setting up virology lab. (1998); Member EBMT, Infectious Diseases Working Party (1997-). Adviser on relevance of human herpesviruses-6/7 infections to measles surveillance, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (1996 & 2002), & Department of Health, Brazil (2002).
